Unsur-unsur bitara ini banyak diketengahkan dalam kajian ilmiah tentang seni bina warisan Melayu oleh para penyelidik dan ahli akademik semenjak tahun 1980an hingga kini. Malah lama sebelum itu lagi catatan-catatan dan rekod orientalis barat seawal abad ke-19 dari para sarjana, ahli ilmiah, pegawai pentadbir serta pengembara luar turut mengakui keunggulan dan kehebatan seni bina rumah warisan Melayu ini di dalam hasil penulisan mereka. Namun begitu, catatan awal dan rekod primer orientalis ini jarang dirujuk pada masa kini. Tujuan kajian ini adalah untuk mengumpulkan catatan-catatan penting orientalis tentang kebitaraan dan keunggulan seni bina warisan Melayu dan mencerakin perbandingan antara sumber lama ini dengan (i) hasil penulisan penyelidik tempatan yang lebih kontemporari/ terkini dan (ii) sesi temubual dengan beberapa tokoh pakar/ akademik dalam bidang pemuliharaan seni bina warisan Melayu hari ini.
